The Microbial Fuel Cell Games (MFC Games) aims to inspire Grades 4-9 students to learn about renewable energy sources and are empowered to take actions.
During our hands-on workshops, participants work in small teams to generate electricity with microbes in ordinary garden soil in Alberta, using a Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC). Then there is a friendly competition to encourage the teams to research and experiment on ways to produce more electricity.
This initiative was founded because there is an increasing level of eco-anxiety among youth. Instead of just finger-pointing, we advocate for more collaborative actions based on the adoption of proven scientific methodologies.
With over 500 participants from multiple schools over the past 2 years, the feedback from both students and teachers are extremely positive. This year, we are very excited that 21 previous student participants will be joining us as MFC Coaches and leading their own workshops. Through our partnership with the University of Calgary, university students are also delivering some workshop activities.
Our objective for this year is to expand our outreach further and double the number of schools involved.
