The MFC Games is an innovative environmental education program built around the fascinating technology of Microbial Fuel Cells (MFC)—a system that uses microbes from ordinary garden soil to generate electricity. With potential applications in space exploration and wastewater treatment, this technology sparks curiosity and inspires young minds to explore solutions for a sustainable future.
Co-founded in 2022 by two visionary high school students, Aaron and Justin, the program is set to impact another 500 students across Canada this year. This remarkable milestone is achieved through partnerships with dedicated leaders like Dr. Irene Herremans (Nature’s Ride), Dr. Marc Strous (University of Calgary), Kerry Blum and Denzil Mackrory (STEM Innovation Academy), University of Calgary, and Inside Education.
Being named alongside incredible organizations like Freshwater Conservation Canada and Goodwill Industries of Alberta is an honor. Their inspiring initiatives remind us of the collective power of community action.
The MFC Games’ community impact speaks volumes: Grade 7 students who previously participated in workshops are now stepping into leadership roles, supported by a passionate team of university student volunteers—Raymond Lam, Stephanie Tan, Chahat Chahat, Aaron Doerksen, Toluwanimi Ogundipe, Chetan Saha, Miranda Moll—whose dedication drives this initiative forward.
